There are several beautiful sandy beaches within 1-2 miles of the accommodation, offering excellent surfing conditions and long intimate walks along the Atlantic periphery.

Nearby is the award-winning Eoropie Dunes play park, a local Historical Society Museum, a licensed social club and a hotel/pub.  Dun Eistean, a small accessible island off the Ness mainland, is the ancestral home of the Clan Morrison and the current site of a comprehensive 4-year archaeological survey.

The Islands Book Trust, with its unique and comprehensive collection of books on Scottish and local history, is open to the public, as is an adjoining quilt making business.

The nearby Lionel School offers lunches during the school year, and has a community swimming pool for public use.  The school is also the site of a £1.8 million leisure and sports centre that is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2006.

The accommodation is within easy access of local amenities, such as well-provisioned mini-markets, Post Offices, a petrol station and local restaurants.

Further information on Ness, local organisations and amenities, as well as a Community Diary can be found on the Iomairt Nis website

And for those who prefer to ‘stay at home’, mobile shop operators and food producers can also deliver fresh bread, groceries, meat, vegetables, fish and shellfish, milk and local free range eggs to your door.

The coastline provides stunning scenery and is a natural habitat for many sea birds, such as gannet, cormorant, shank and several type of gull, to name but a few.

Loch Stiapabhat, a small inland lake, has recently been designated the first Local Nature Reserve (LNR) to be established in the Western Isles.

The Loch Stiapabhat site has been described by Andy Robinson of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) as, “A very rare and unique habitat in Lewis terms, which provides vital feeding and breeding habitat for several important species of birds, including the ever dwindling corncrake.”

The Loch is situated within the Ness and Barvas Special Protection Area established to conserve this rare bird and its habitat. Loch Stiapabhat’s position at the Northern end of Lewis, makes it the first standing water to greet migrant birds flying in from the north in Autumn and the last re-fuelling post for birds heading north to breed in the Spring.  The area now has a purpose built hide for bird watchers.

The main town of Stornoway, with its airport and ferry links to the island, is just a short forty-minute drive from the accommodation. Many stunning attractions, such as the world famous Calanish Stones, are located within easy driving distance.

Car hire is available on the island and, for those who wish to leave their car behind, a local taxi service is only a phone call away.
